Que Requisition signified by Query No 4, having
for its subject Item 3. Paid Messrs Campbell and White,
Timber Merchants at Milbank for Wharfage Rent
to 1st Decr 1798. £50. "The Accountant is required
to produce the receipt for this payment.

Answer.

In the tenor of that Item I had it stands expressly
declared that stated "the receipt not forthcoming": but it is
therein also stated that "a fresh acknowledgment of the
"sum actually paid can could doubtless be obtained."
Taken literally, th by the terms "the receipt" would be
designated "the receipt" which I ha in the pap Account
then lying before him I had expressly stated as not being
capable of being produced: But I willingly am willing out of respect for Mr Chief Inspector for Mr Chief Inspector's sake, I am
willing and desirous to believe [that not that the supposed paper so
mentioned by me under the name of the receipt, but this
continually expected paper under the name of the a fresh acknowledgment
was meant by him Mr Chief Inspector to
be designated. [+] that the paper he
meant to call for
the production of was
not a paper of the
non-producibility of
which he had an
assurance before his
eyes, but the the
succedaneum which,
under by the description of
"a fresh acknowledgment"
was proposed in lieu
of it. By a word or two of explanation,
state this malignity would might have been removed: and with
it the demand for what, or as it is as the matter stands seems not altogether
unnecessary on my part, in the way of argument.
No such receipt having been taken by me or on my account at the time,
none no such contemporary "receipt" can now be produced by
me. But "a fresh acknowledgment" has been received
by me, and by and with a letter of mine to the Secretary of the
Board Audit Office dated 1808 + was transmitted to the Board. + 1808
