Query 5. Item 4.
Workmen's Receipts
not proper
[Unless it was in the way of general reputation report
to which of which any purpose any other testimony would have been
as good as theirs.] If for argument sake, so it happened that if they any more be the assured information
than what would be equally possessed by any of the
hundreds many persons to the amount of hundreds by
whom they were at one time or other seen at work
came to the knowledge of them or any of them, it could
only be from the Foreman under whom they were
working, whose knowled information on that head could
not have had any other authentic source than
to against whose testimony Mr Chief Inspector turns a deaf shuts his eyes
ear, and whose own information on this head must
have been originally derived from his principal employers viz.
my Brother or and myself.
In that case Mr Chief Inspector might
have objected to this evidence; and even on g rather
better grounds, than any which he can have for
requiring it. Here (he might have said) is the
Accountant, practising upon a number of ignorant
handicrafts, and getting them to join in attesting in attestation of
matter of fact, which, if true, they could not have
learnt but from himself: giving to his non interested determination,
made in pursuance of his own purposes, the
appearance and colors of unexc uninterested and
unexceptionable evidence.
