offered, to take that either that spot so demanded by me,
and granted to me as aforesaid, or any other. The taking of that spot
was declined: declined, that it in conduct, but never
in my express certainly in writing, nor so much as by word of
mouth, that I can recollect, in any express words: much
to obtain a reason, much labor was used for this
virtual refusal, much labour was expended, and
no inconsiderable quantity of ink and paper: but
no reason was ever given.
Of the statement, quoted copied from my said Examination,
as above, no part, any more than of any other statement
therein contained, was ever controverted.
By a Treasury Letter sent in to the same
Committee, on the month preceding, || || 4 May 1798 and printed in

at least as concerns the present purpose, already admitted.
"Their Lordships further direct me to acquaint you, that
