At the time of my this

After the waste of so many thousand pounds of
my own money previously property, subsequently as well as abundantly to
the £2,000 of public money so fruitlessly bestowed, it
was natural, and I hope neither unjust, nor un any
other sum discommendable, that I should embrace
whatever opportunity happened to present itself, for saving
to my own use this or that small matter out of the wreck of that
mixt mass of property of which the Government money in question composed so small a
part: property
wrecked - not by
myself, but by the
servants of Government
in the manner stated
in the any so often
mentioned examination,
and never controverted
by any
of those who had
therein been spokenalluded to
of, as the authors
of the wreck.

No (says the Chief Inspector) that you shall not
do: not a penny of it, till you have refunded the whole of this
£2,000, put into your hands for a purpose which
might all along might have been, but never have been, put
into your power to accomplish. Whatsoever you
have been able to save is got back, these have in the
view and hope of lessening it your loss . I will hereby sure
itin it the whole of it, for the benefit of his Majestys government <add>that government, by the</add> those by whose difficult of whose servant
it has been occasioned.

Ten years ago viz. in June or July 1798
on the occasion of my said examination before the Finance
Committee, ten years ago on consideration of the
£9,000 or thereabouts which then stated to have been
expended of my own money, it occurr some of the gentlemen
of in the Committee regardidg compensation as my due,
thought fit, some of them put questions to examine to me on that subject
and this notwithstanding the £2,000 government money which
had beenhad heard me all along stating as spent along with my own,
and to as little purpose.
