Answer
Query 6

1. For proof of my being, considered on the 10th of August 10 Aug. 1800
1800, and thereafter down to the 24th of March 1801, 24 March 1801.
considered, by the Lords of the Treasury, and the Secretary
of State, then the Duke of Portland as entitled on the count
of the relinquishment of the undertaking in question, viz.
the intended Penitentiary Establishment, to compensation, I here subjoin a few
passages short extracts from divers Treasury Minutes and Letters that
may been seen in a document, printed for the House of
Commons, by order dated 12 June 1801, and intituled 12 June 1801
"Further Proceedings of the Lords Commissioners of his
"Majesty's Treasury &c . respecting the matters stated
"in the Reports of the Committee of Finance, so far as
"they relate to the several Offices concerned in the Receipt
"and Expenditure of the Public money."

P. 79 No 9 Title "28th Report Penitentiary Establishment
No 9.

"Copy of Treasury Minute of the 13th August 1800. 13 August 1800
Extract — "But they" (the Lords of the Treasury) "submitt to
"his Grace, whether, by way of Experiment, it may be
"fit to carry it into effect on a more limited Scale,
"or whether, under all the Circumstances, it may be advisable
"at the present time, to relinquish the Plan altogether.
"In the latter Event, their Lordships shall feel
"it incumbent on them to make such Compensation to
"Mr Bentham, as the loss he has sustained in preparing
"for this Undertaking may appear to them to deserve."

N.B. It might from hence be supposed, that, , if
on the subject of compensation thus started, something had then recently been
said, to which I had been party: but nothing neither by me,
nothing on that subject had ever been no such claim had ever been
preferred
or meant to be preferred
and my aversion to the idea
having been stands declared
in sufficiently explicit
terms in my Examination beforementioned: and the sentiments therein declared have all along remained unchanged.
