3. Answer to the Query "whether he has received any
"assurances of the intention of the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury
"to carry the original plan of creating Penitentiary
"Houses into execution."
In the Treasury Letter dated 4th May 1798 and
signed Charles Long which Letter is printed in p.
65 of the said 28th Report being the page immediately
preceding that which gives the commencement of the
Draft spoken of in the former part of this Query, it
Mr Secretary Long is said "Their Lordships further
direct me to acquaint you, that
At this Considerably before this time the course of expenditure
of which the £2,000 in question formed a part had
as stated in my said examination, and from the causes
therein stated, ceased. This being the case, it appears I apprehend
to me with submission, if, in pursuance of the ca requisition contained
in the concluding part of this Query, I were "to
"p set about transmitting transmitt to this Office the
"originals as authenticated copies of my letters or communication
"I may have received from the Treasury
"on the subject, I should encumber the Board with
a parcel of papers, if any such were to be found, having
no relation to the subject in question, viz. the receipt
and expenditure of the said £2,000. In no letter
or communication that I ever received from the Treasury is
any mention made of it: unless it be the Kings Warrant, a
copy of which is printed on the next page (p.66.)
