8 Aug. 1808 conclusion
To Mallet
(3) (1) Conclusion

3 1
These propositions can
not hope for any
evident acceptance

I am sensible, as fully sensible as any gentleman
can be to whose lot it may fall to feel the of
so important presumptuous and unaccustomed an address how much more agreeable pleasant
it is to us all, and on all occasions to do as we please than as
we ought.

I am accordingly aware, that unless (it should
happen
) to gentlemen in the situation in question it
should happen to feel find themselves altogether unlike to what
men are in every other, it is not in the nature of
any such suggestion as are here hazarded to expence
at the hands of the gentlemen to whom they are addressed,
any thing like a ready and willing and cordial acceptance.

4
The only chance
they can have of
acceptance depends on
upon the action of adequate motives
which not on
this occasion not
been ready made
must be made.

He who wills the means end must will the means: he
who calls upon any one else to do perform any thing, must
to give himself any chance of success present, and if he finds no sufficient ones ready
made must chance, motives adequate to the production
of the effect which is the object of his wishes. In the present instance It is
to in such chance if any, howsoever faint as it may be as
any power to give invest, of for presenting the adequate
mass of inducement, pointing/leading to compliance that the only chances I can have
of seeing my these suggestions productive of any fruit, is grounded

To p.7

On the part of the people, or of a portion to a certain unanimous
enough to be formidable, secure attention become eventually troublesome to as to command.
