Expte Bentham - before the Arbitrators
Messrs Wishaw & Hullrelk betwn the hours of 9 & 11 at
Mr Wishaws Chambers
At the conclusion of the Lloyds Examination
it was asked what further witnesses were
to be examined & when they would be ready
to attend - and it was observed by the Arbitrators and by the gentlemen attending on behalf of the Treasury that it
was impossible within the time limited
to go fully into the case -
Mr Cooke then said that Mr Bentham had
much better make some perposition to
the Treasury - that the sum he had demanded ++ The observation thereupon made by Mr Roe on
behalf of Mr Bentham was that the sum mentioned
was so enormous that there was no
dealing with it - but if some reasonable
sum were mentioned it would be for the
Treasury to consider whether they would
admit it, and if not and they proposed
some lesser sum which Mr Bentham
declined to accept then it might be for
the Arbitrators to decide upon the difference.
