Panopt. Compensation Claim II. Trade profit estimate
impracticable

(3) (2) 13

Were it to become necessary to me to attempt building
upon this ground, to what course — to what sort of evidence
could I betake myself?

On the part of my Brother — on my own part —
any calculations any declarations on the subject, were they ever so sincere —
nay could the sincerity of them be ever so plainly
demonstrated, which in any degree it is impossible in
the nature of the case they should be — would be altogether
inadmissible. Any thing but From any such so situated a very high estimate would
not in fact be a true one: and any estimate which were a true
one would not appear to be so.

To what other source of evidence could recourse be
had? Of any such enterprize no conception could
had ever by any other person been entertained. From
first to last with no other person did my brother ever
communicate on the subject — at least to any extent worth
mentioning but the labouring hands who were employed
upon the works: each confining his views to the particular
branch of business on which his were employed — none of
them considering regarding even that branch of business with on any
extensive and mercantile point of view, they would be still less competent
to the framing of any such estimate than a person of a
mercantile education and correspondent habits to whose
thoughts had never applied themselves the branch of manufacture
in question were altogether new.

Since the publication of my Brothers patents, by
persons here and there a few persons, all of whom I may venture to
speak of as having derived no inconsiderable proportion
if not the whole of their instruction from that source, have
applied machinery upon sinister principles to the exemption
of this or that species of work included wi either directly included
in or closely analogous to his works partly executed compleated as well as
described
