But without having made any such treat — for no
such treats have either I or my Brother made — it
will I imagine be without much difficulty understood
how unpromising and inadequate any
how ill-adapted to any such purpose as that of giving putting
an adequate estimate of the value of the antecedent
inventions of another person, any such artist the real opinion and still
more the declared opinion of any such artist would
naturally be. That which he were conscious of not being
able to accomplish of himself, he could not be expected
to be very favoured to acknowledge as likely to be accomplished
by another person: in at the same time
whatsoever it was that he regarded appeared to him
most likely to be accomplished with success, that is the
very thing which he himself will naturally have undertaken
and accomplished.

If driven by necessity such is the sort of evidence
which I should have to look out for.

But now — in the third of the above heads of claim
will be found a ground by the simplicity of which
I flatter myself my Arbitrators will be released from
the task of sitting in judgment on any such faint and
imperfect lights, as well as myself from that of looking
out for them and bringing them to view.
