Even where the person in question is altogether unknown
prodigality is not a mode of living which the known character
of the human mind will warrant warrant a man in presumption.
Prodigals, as being known hav in general are
Prodigality presents itself more readily to nature than
the contrary line of conduct: but it is for the very reason
that it is so much more rare. Taking the whole of the any
In any large community such as this Kingdom taking the
whole together, prodigals the whole number of them, would
as it is the observation of Adam Smith, be found to constitute but a very minute
part of it. This even among persons taken at large:
but among our objects was that of pecuniary profit, and, on
the part of persons embarked on any such pursuit, prodigality,
though certainly not without example, is at any
rate still more less frequent and presumable than on the part amongst
of an equal number of persons taken at large.
If therefore nothing had been known concerning us but
that we were persons who for such a course of years had been
engaged in the pursuit in question, and that at the end of that
time there was a deficiency to such an amount as that in
question viz £500 a year in landed estate — these circumstances
put together, would it is submitted, on an occasion
such as the question, where after all our prospects hopes and the fruit of
all our labours, had been first blasted by the breath, and aft
finally crushed by the strong hand of power, be regarded as
sufficient in the character of circumstantial evidence to prove
that it was by in those that the deficiency had it its
cause.
