Panopt. Compensation Claim III. Contract
(8) (1) 2 Objection
Bookkeeper
Objection 2. But whether engaged in the management
of the Penitentiary concern for government, or in the private manufacturing
concern, whatsoever profits you may have been
in expectation of, all just expenditure would have been dependant
on a good economy: and how can that economy
be called good in which no regular accounts are
kept? in a word in which there is any feature at
all considerable either in the correctness or the compleatness
of the accounts
Answer. Of the importance of good economy in
general, and in an indispensable concomitant of it, of
good Book-keeping in particular, has ever been of the most
lively kind: and my the attention paid by me to it no
less so. Without the past sys profit of Book-keeping
which it were in my power to devise, accompanied with
the most determined resolution to persevere in the practice
of it, I should no more have thought of entering
upon any such undertaking as that in question. I
mean the maintenance of the Convicts in the Panopticon
place including the my Brothers system of mechanical works
than I should of cutting my right hand off. On the subject
of Book-keeping so far has/so true is it that my own attention had never been from having
ever fallen short of the average there, that a printed work which
amongst others I shall have to lay before my arbitrators
will serve to shew how far it has gone beyond that mark.
and besides the notice taken of it in France by Government
as mentioned in the Preface, instances could be shewn w in
which to serve as a model for private establishments, it
has been begged of me by individuals.
