30 April 1813 1o
Panopt. Compensation Claim III. Contract
(3) 4. Becker

1. First set of data

Year stated in the Table the last year, but no otherwise described than as
being a Year ending on 24th of June. The date of
on which the evidence Mr Becker's examination in which reference
is made to this Table was taken, is 13th March 1811
According to this date the then last year should be the
year ending the 24 June 1810. But unless there be a misprint somewhere, it can not have
been that year: since in his Evidence as reported on
p.34 the average number of prisoners is stated as having
been, in that year 26: whereas in this same Table
the average number in custody during that same Year is stated as being
but 20, whereof the number employed is stated as being
but 13 3/4

In and for this imaginary or unascertainable year
we have the following statements, viz

1. Accrual of Net profits arising from the labour of the prisoners,
the average number employed being 13 3/4 for the
year ending on the 24th of June — — — — — — £181:3s:6d

This gives for the average net profit in each such employed
prisoner — — — — — — £13:18s:8d

But those the 6 1/4 who are not employed must be maintained as
well as those the 13 3/4 who are employed

This same total therefore gives for the whole number 20
no more per head than £9:1s:2d

That the number during that same year was as just
stated, 20, employed and unemployed together, appears
from the next article

2. Amount of County allowance for the maintenance of 20
prisoners, being the average number in custody during the
year ending on the 24th of June — — — £198:14s:0d

An odd enough coincidence is — that the same sum
of the total number of prisoners gives [exactly the same]
as and for the allowance made by the County exactly
the same sum as that which is expressive of the amount
as above of net profit for per head upon that same the whole number (20) of
prisoners together, employed and not employed.
