10) §.4 +
on several occasions, in the House and elsewhere, took particular
cognicance of the plan and never without expressions or other tokens
of approbation, tho' I have no particular recollection of my having
seen him viewing the works, his having viewed them is scarce doubtful
to me. The like observation may apply to the present Earl of Harrowby:
of the having seen his Lordship at my House on any such occasion
I have no particular recollection: but I remember dining in
company with him about that time with but one person more
in company at Mr Wilberforce's; & I remember exchanging a few
words with his Lordship's late father, upon the occasion of his being
one of a crowd of visitors, whom, without warning give to me ,
Mr Wilberforce, in his zeal, had partly sent, and partly brought
with him, in such a multitude as to be productive of a sort of
whimsical distress, by which the circumstance has been fixed in
my memory.

If that same Committee, other members, in any number, may
have been spectators of those same works, without any recollection or
knowledge. For the purpose of being out of the way of these and other
interruptions, I used, in those days, to pass perhaps the greatest
part of my time, in studious solitude, at a country lodging:
and, during such my absence, it was by my brother that
whatever was to be seen was shewn. Sir Samuel Romilly,
though not a member of the House, may, on this
same occasion, be also mentioned: because, by reason of our
intimacy, it would naturally be in his way to view the
works, much more frequently than they could have been viewed
by any of the gentlemen above mentioned: and because to my
Arbitrators any recollection which he may happen to have
in relation to this matter, would be so readily accessible.

As to the workmen, who, to the number of 20,
and I know not how many more, were employed in the works,
they are, most of them dead or dispersed. But from two of them,
an account, as particular as could be desired, might be obtainable
