§.6. (4) +
per day was, I always understood, the very lowest pay commonly
given , in the vicinity of the Metropolis, to day labourers employed in
Gardeners grounds: and, if I was not misinformed, there is not any
species of day labour lower paid, especially where science is out of
the question, than Gardeners.

All these things taken together, it will be conceived,
I imagine, without much difficulty, that I should not speak
truly, were I to state my own expectations of the profit to be derived expected from
the labour of each man at so low a rate as 2s:6d a day: the expences of
their maintenance being at the same time, on the grounds such as
will be mentioned presently + + p.34 expected to have been defrayed by the £12 a year
headmoney, which I was to receive.

True it is that, by the terms of the Contract, out of the
money earned by them, and so received by me, I stood engaged to allow
to each man one fourth to be applied as the draught of the Contract
printed in the Report, will shew. But against this deduction,
there remains to be set, the whole of the Master manufacturer's
profit upon such part of the labour of the whole thousand, as would
be employed upon the works belonging to the new invented mechanism.

As this would have been by far the greatest part, I flatter
myself that it will not appear unreasonable, if, taking into
account the extra pay, of the experienced and dexterous hands, whose
place would, by means of the machinery be supplied by the labour of
these comparatively raw hands, - the extra dispatch, which would
have been as infallible an accompaniment of that other advantage
(work for instance, which elsewhere could not have been done
for less than 3s, 4s, 5 s, or 6s a day, executed here, and not improbably
with some number of times (though antecedently to experience
it is impossible to say what number of times) the dispatch by
workmen
