2. But, from this £12,000, as per Sir George Paul and Mr Beecher, ought

8. Of both these gentlemen taken together the Examinations,
composing the Evidence and the only Evidence, on the ground of which
my Contract was, in and by the Act in question, rescinded, which Evidence
is, in the whole complection of it, unfavourable to my plan, in a degree
which cannot but be obvious to the slightest glance, it may not be altogether
unnecessary to me, now that, for the purpose in question, I find
it necessary thus to endeavour to point the attention of my Arbitrators
to it, to observe that, till it was in print, I knew nothing of the
reference which it bore to my plan; and that no opportunity of
making any answer to it, antecedently to the printing of the Report;
which, as above, was grounded on it, was ever possessed by me; - that
of all the observations made in it to the prejudice of my plan, there
is not one to which I should not have conceived myself able to give
a complete answer; and that, were the representations, therein
made of my statements, compared with such of those statements
as, at the time of making those representations, were in the hands of the
Reverend Gentleman by whom they were made, and

as are printed in that same appendix, those representations would
be found to contain important, not to say fundamental, errors,
the number of which, I believe, for I have never set myself to count
them, wold be found far from inconsiderable.

Eloquense,of a sort not altogether free from passion,
and the weight of authority - the sort of authority with which
experience, required in a commanding situation naturally applies
itself to the understandings which it has to deal with - will, I believe,
by any impartial eye, be seen to be the sort of force which, in the
instance
