this account is no more than a single week; and, in regard to
that period of a week, the same uncertainty, as that above indicated
in relation to the period of two years, has been produced by the
same cause.

Answer. The same as that which stands applied to the
fifth Rate - the last preceding Rate, as above.

II. For the Claimant. Observations No 1, 2, 3, and 4:
the same as those which are brought to view in realtion to
the five preceding cases, as above.

5. Observation the 5<hi rend="superscript">th.</hi> In the instance of these two last
Rates, being the two Southwell Rates, the smallness of the
scale, as compared with the largeness of it in the Claimant's
case, will be found particularly observable. In the Southwell
Prison, in the above mentioned selected and most favourable
week, the number of the Prisoners is not stated at more than
26, of which number, 3 are stated as unemployed: leaving for
the number employed no more than 23.

In the same Table, in and for "the last year", described
as being "the year ending the 24th day of June," but no year mentioned,
the "average number in custody" is stated as no greater 20; "average
"number employed" no greater than 13 3/4. On looking over
the employments specified in this weekly account, only two
will be found, to which, in a situation such as the Claimant's,
with any such view as that of profit, any man could for a moment
have entertained a thought of giving admission. These are
Shoe making and Framework-knitting: Number of the
Earners, Shoemakers, 3: weekly earning, 14s " 6,d; 10s " 5 ; and
8s: - Frame-work-knitters 4: weekly earnings, 11s " 3 1/2d; 9s ;
8s " 10d; 8s " 1d. But together, these make 7 out of the 23
working
