The station which Geometry in g occupies in the general
Encyclopedia should be pointed. This should be the way
and the only way of discovering and & displaying its real
Use. I Every Author in this science has been
(if you will believe him) fully persuaded himself
of the its Utility. He has attempted also to
persuade others of it, he has told them so over
and over again. He has told you that such
another great man has said so, least you should not
choose to believe him. But he has never set
about any tolerable way of circumscribingpointing out its
the extent of its Utility. No bounds have
been ever set to its Use. it is has been said
to be usefull &even necessary in every other
science. Bare Assertions
of Geometry
not Satisfactory
but who is to give credit to
such a bare assertion. who is there who can
believe that to know how to prove 2 boundaries
of a triangle to be greater than the 3rd, or
the angles at the of an Isosceles triangle
to be equal. is necessary to any one but
those concerned in mensuration &the like.
A very confined Use
only appears
at first Sight
Who is then who upon reading a prop
in 5th Book about Equimultiples of Equimultiples
or the last of that Book by Simpson.
but would be more likely to be
rather tempted to pronounce such stuff
absolutely useless, rather than a part of
