Prefatoria Geometry
Because the Figure of the Substance being permanent
permanent gives Time & Opportunity to reiterate
and perpetuate the first impression, without
deviation. It is not so with Motion, it is
rare that any Individual Motion is succeeded
by any one other much more by a constant
succession of others in every respect so alike.
Of Motions not constant, those which are produced by art
are more likely to suggest [fixed]
Ideas of particular figures than those produced
by Nature, because when produced
by Art they have necessarily had the Attention
that is Man's Attention to accompany them.
If one produced the Idea of them has as
certainly been produced, if produced a second
time the Idea of them must have been
produced a second time, and so on
quoties till at length if they have been
frequently repeated, so that the more frequently
they have been repeated the more probable it
is that it has taken root in the memory
and grown up into a General Idea laid up as if
were in stone ready to be drawn forth upon occasion
