The particular Use of the 5 Book is
The 5th Book it should seem is seldom or
ever applied to Use but as the doctrine
of Numbers and particularly that of proportion Qualities can be done
nothing with no comparison can be made
but by the assistance of numbers.

If this be ease, say you, of what use
is it now a days to learn it, he have
rules whi given for the management
of numbers, which tho' they may have
originally depended on the 5th book
for a demonstration of their efficacy
are now so sufficiently established
that one may always trust to them
from the authority of others. and
why then should one our
trouble ourselves with Equimultiples
of Equimultiples ratios compounded
of Ratios and such stuff as that,
are these not rules of Arithmetic
such as the Rule of three &c. which will
answer ones purpose as well. [+]

In answer to this all is that
instead of viewing an equation in Arithmetic
