This Science 'tis true appears to be nearer arrived
at the point of Perfection, at least it is much farther
advanced towards it than most others,
but this does not prove it to be the most usefull
its Nature is such as to be easier exhausted.
No one would think it to be compared in point
of Utility with Morality Jurisprudence
Chemistry Mechanics &c. but yet in point
of Perfection it far excedes either of these.
To shew how necessary it is that quantities
to be compared Geometrically should be
divided into aliquots and that none can
be compared but what are thus divided
take the abstract Idea of Colour for example
Euclid does not exclude Colour from Quantity
from being applicable to Colour, and
yet no proportion between one Colour
& another can be found. Certainly
the Idea of one Colour may be compared
to that of another yet none of the
Prop of 5th Book can be made any use
of in such comparison
