obliged to express the Quantities themselves
to express them at all.
You have discover the number of aliquots
each equal to the common measure
which a e each contains. If they it be alike you the same the two
numbers are equal by Ax. you ma say there is proportion of equality between
them.If they it be original not the same they are not equal Ax. it is saidyou say there
is proportion of inequality between them.
These are all the new Ideas arising from
the comparison of one Quantity with another viz
that there is Proportion of Equality or inequality
between them:
But we have occasion to discover if of two other
Quantities the one bears the same proportion to
the other as one of these did to the other, in
other words we have occasion to compare
the proportion between two other Quantities
with that between these twolot to do this
now for these two quantities as well as for the other
do two there must be found some common
measure. Any common measure could do
if it only wanted to discover if there
was a proportion of equality or inequality
between them. but this is not all
