1. Cause of
Obscurity.
One perpetual cause of the Obscurity of the 5th Book
(and indeed of that of the others) is, that words expressive
of non existencies, [of fictitious entities] have the
same Grammatical form with real existencies
[names of Substances]. Substantives proper

distinction)
are noways distinguishable from each other.
by their office in a sentence, articles are professed
to them, they are the subject of a Sentence:
Non Existencies
confounded with Real Existencies.
they become the object of an adjective Proposition.
they are spoken of as being equal to greater &
less than these of the same class [they are ever brought
into comparison with one another] and the imagination
is obliged to strain a point farther [to go advance a step farther]
and to suppose those non existencies to be capable
of being divided into other non existencies of a
stated number & quantity.
Whatever assistance these imaginary beings may
be of in common conversation they certainly very much
impede the giving clear Ideas where great accuracy
is required. It is difficult to retain in ones
memory the Paraphrasis by which such term
is expounded.
