have been made but by the assistance of numbers.

He might have told his companions he saw many
men, a great many men, a multitude of men
an amazing multitude of men. but these expression
carry but a very uncertain Idea of the number,
for this purpose at that time of day such expression
might be sufficient. but as men were civilized
when more accurate Idea were necessary these
expressions could not suffice.

Various are the reasons a man might have to
express the Ideas of different numbers of things to his
companions yet, a half a dozen men half a dozen trees& they
could not at any time bring into view to shew them, if they
had the idea of them therewith they could not
make it known to their organisms, yet some similarthings
which may be there are which they either
always did or always could carry about with them
