(24 Prefat. Origination of Numbers

When visible marks permanent ways of expressing Ideas
were invented, then of numbers among the rest
not no doubt had their representatives, marks
equal to the number to the objects they were part
to represent were probably the first, but afterwards
having occasion to express mar so many objects
as would take up too much words. a more complicated
method were figures were inventedintroduced. The Roman figures seem
to favor this. a number as far as 3 or even
four is expressed by an equal number of strokes.
