It was the consciousness of the necessity of dividing
into aliquots, to judge of the Proportion which
one bears to the other, that induced men
to set about inventing Barometers, Thermometers,
Anemometers, steel yards spring & not, Electrometers, on which a line
might be divided to represent the imaginary
aliquots of the several properties they were
meant to measure so as to be expressed
by counting only the number of those aliquots.
Then here exemplified come under the same head the

Scales come under there another head

But it is not the business here to trace
describe in what manner they act how
it is that each of divisions there indicate similar increase
or dimensions in these properties they measure
