Conduct
observing the operations of my own mind, I put the
Question to shew I observed the operation of theirs. &c
I was satisfied that this was the only operation
that would come as a general Criterion, a
Criterion which I hear every one must himself
of in the usefull part of mathematics altho'
he may himself with the thoughts of
having a more general one for the Useless
parts. As soon as I was satisfied I had
found so criminal a I sat myself
down to profit by it I perceived
I could bid adieu to the fifth definition
and all the demonstrations depending on it.
I had not even patience to read them. I presumed that I could
every proposition new demonstrations upon
the foundation of this criterion for any proposition
such demonstrations as convinced those
who read them at first sight in the time required to read them.
Judging how much clearer the 5th Book was by
this means made to the I with
I had no means to thrive but it would appear
so to the Public in general. yet scarcely could
I think it possible that is less one
to permit the so obvious an operation
I consulted all the Editions I could find to
see if the same thought had not occured to others
