D'Alembert
In speaking of the abstraction of Ideas, one he
enumerates the several Ideas each is compared and
abstracts one or more from the composition
hesays L'idée de corps est est composée de trois
autres, 1, Etendue. 2 impenetrabilite. 3 barnes
en tous sons, ab that is to say Suppose Siguefiguree.
This plan must most certainly be an excellent one
to define all abstract terms All fictitious
entities of bodies [Phisical Qualities properties]
might be defined by a Table according to this
plan.
Moral ones [Epithets] expressive of tendency
to a diverging from the common test might be
both defined according to an by the order of
their arrangement. Beginning wither with the
nearest and so parting to the furthest, or
beginning by the furthest and approaching
still the nearest. I do not mean terms
expressive of particular wishes & views such
a table could not be constructed to please
every one, but terms of expression of the
degrees. terms not significant of what was
good but how to express the several degrees of
goodness.
