on the other hand the Geometer proves them to touch in
the same in one point only. The mechanic then
knows that it is in the imperfection of his materials
or workmanship that is the cause of his not doing
what the Geometer does and he promises that
the greater the imperfection in material & workmanship
the more will the perfection of his lines render
from that which the Geometer supposes.
The Geometer disengages himself from all consideration
of species of Matter. It is the Mechanics business
apply what the Geometer has asserted in general to the
particular substances, he must know how far
they will be true of the several substances, he must
by experience have learned the properties of those
which render them imperfect. and the degree in
which each possess these properties.
The Geometer has nothing to do with this.
It is this that seems to constitute the difference, to
draw the line between the two possessions.
