Now for an exemplification of that medium of invention
which is a medium of effectuation. It is borrowed from the
first of the Proposition which presents itself in themselves in Euclid's
Elements of Geometry. It is Standing as it does in need of
a medium of effectuation, it is what is called a in contradistinction
to a Theorem, a Problem.

To constitute an equilateral triangle upon a given finite
right line. In Slim's translation, these are words of it.

Of these words one word is much worse then useless:
its tendency is — not to say its sure effect is - to involve the mind
of a beginner in a dark cloud. Whoever saw an infinite
right line? what mud is there — what use is then in
the exception thus applied? in saying to the pupil — "Merit
"I what I am going to enable to do it — not to constitute
"an equilateral triangle upon an infinite right line: how a
"case of mistakes"

The cases - that while writing them, that which Euclid
had in his head was that idea of infinity with which on so
many occasions he had been in use it had been his to puzzle himself
as if it had been a positivethe pre of thing! whereas it is cutting but
the idea of the absence or non-existence — absence — partial or
universal - from a particular plan or form plans of the
peculiar thing in question. The expert and practiced Geometrician
put in his mind this idea: but no pupil in the mind ofinto whose head
this proposition is put for the first time any such such
idea as that of infinity be present.

Note (a)

From the Greek, theorem means - thing to be seenlooked at and considered,
problem - in task as it cast before or set before the
individual in question, to be performed by him.
