§.1. Subject matter of this
work

1.
Shown by the title
are
1. Subject matter
2. Object

2

3.
Division 1.
Mathematics is either
1. Pure or 2 Mixt

4.
Consequence of the
word purity, obscurity
and delusion.

5.
By purity is suggested
in the name
the opposite quality
impurity: a dyslogistic
appellative to which
stands associated the
idea of strong disapprobation.
Here then
is maleficent delusion:
for no just
ground for disapprobation
has place.

6.
Evil consequences of this
delusion particularized —
1. a notion that to pure
mathematics belongs
a dyslogistic mystical
transcendent value
independent of and
superior to that of
mixt mathematics:
independent of and superior
to that of every thing that belongs to science.

§.1. Subject matter &c

7.
2. By many the so-called
pure branch is studied
without going
on to the mixt:
and thus the labor
is applied to what
is useless, to the exclusion
of all that
is intrinsically
useful.

9.
Nomenclature here
substituted for
avoidance of that
inconvenience: for
pure say in applicable
or as yet unapplied:
for mixt applied
— viz. to physics:
subject matter of its
objects cognizable by
one or more of the
five senses.

10.
II. Division 2d into
1. Alegomorphic: or
Form-not dis-regarding
2. Morphoscopic: or
form-regarding.

11.
To alegomorphics belong
all branches in
which diagrams are
not employed — viz.
Arithmetic, Algebra,
Fluxions, &c. For non
Greek readers, Arithmetic with its et cæteras.

12.
To Morphoscopics
branches in which diagrams
are employed:
viz, 1. Elementary Geometry
2. Trigonometry — Conic
Sections &c. say Geometry with its et cæteras.

§.1. Subject matter &c

13.
For Mathematics, Posology
is here employed.
Reason — Because in
the Greek Mathematics
means every thing
that can be learnt:
Posology, only what
regards quantity,
which is what is
here meant.

14.
Unobjectionable the
appellative: if Posology
is Greek, so
is Mathematics.

15
For Alegomorphic Posology
say for
shortness Alegomorphics:
for Morphoscopic
Posology
Morphoscopics. As
to these Appellatives
see Chrestomathia.

§.2. Object of this work

1.
Now as to diffusion
in contradistinction
to advancement.

2.
Diffusion is as the
number of persons
to whom the thing
is communicated.

3.
Advancement is as the
quantity of the information
communicated.

4.
Reasons for the preference
of diffusion.
1. Addition to happiness
greater — for
to unapplied posology
advancement may
to any amount be
given without
addition to happiness.

5.
II. To advancement,
much inventive genius
has been
successfully applied;
to diffusion, little.
