1831. May 17.

J.B. on Posology.

ult.
1. Alegomorphics.
§ Formation of Alegomorphics

1.
Now Alegomorphics and
the elucidation performed
by exhibiting
the manner of its formation:
participle or
noun substantive, as
in Geology.

2.
Wonderful it may be
seen that after such a
succession of extensively
learned and inventive
minds, so much
has been
left to a pauvre ignorant.

3.
Thus it was with Posology:
Priestly, whose discoveries
about airs were made when he
knew next to nothing
of what was then to be
known in Chemistry.

4
In the case of J. B. so
was it in regard to the
art and science of legislation:
but enough
of this.

5.
Not till just now has
Logic taken in hand
Posology: Logic Empress
of all the other
arts and sciences.

6.
Modes of formation in
the natural order of
this line, these —

1. Abbreviation

Original form that of
ordinary discourse.

1. Step the first, single words
signifying each more than
one, instead of the original
one repeated; two instead
of one and one; three instead
of one and one & one &c as we
still say one & twenty &c.

7.
2. Step the second, Greek
and Roman numeral
figures instead of
words belonging to the
ordinary discourses.

8.
3. Step the third
3. Arabic numerals.

9.
Addition — 4 for 2 & 2.

10.
4 Multiplication —
6 for three times 2.

11.
5. Signs for words: Examples
+ - x ÷

12.
6. Letters for figures.

1. For known numbers
first letters of
the alphabet in
Non-Capitals

2. For unknown numbers
three last letters
of the alphabet
in Non-Capitals.

13.
7. Single letters for
combinations of figures
and letters.

14
II. Equivalence — indications
of equivalent
expressions:
under this is included
indication of synonymous
terms. Better
known than equivalence
or indication
of equivalences
is the
locution synonymous
terms
. But these
suffice not: need has
place of equivalence as
between proposition and
proposition as well as
between term and
proposition, and
term and term.

15
Equivalences run in
serieses. These serieses
run in two orders:
viz.
1. Order of augmentation
2. Order of diminution.

16
I. Order of augmentation

1. First step, one &
one as equal to two.
2. Second step addition
3. Third step multiplication

17.
Where abbreviation
is there equivalence
is. But in posology
in alegomorphics,
of abbreviation
the nature or at
least result is not
the same as in
ordinary discourse.
In posology, the
thing signified
is when abbreviated
identical,
in ordinary discourse
equivalent
only.

18
Not wherever
equivalence has
place, so has abbreviation.
Example
— between
three and three
and three times
two equivalence
has place; abbreviation,
not.
