than by means of their relation
one to another, that any correct
and comprehensive conception
of the several objects subject matters in question
can ever be obtained; and that
of these several relations, there
are not perhaps any which
are not susceptible apt & adequate of receiving
expression by means of these
locutions whereof these portions
of language which are most in
use are compared: as, for example,
words expressive of relative
situations, right hand, left
hand, top, bottom, and so forth.

By them Now then,

Now then, suppose the
several propositions, with their
respective demonstrations and
the intermediate amendments,
as the parliamentary phrase has
it, — amendments additive,
defalcative or say substractive,
and substitutive which is a
compound of both, — suppose
these expressed in ordinary
language the relations expressed
by them as having place
between the different distinguishable
parts of the figure
in these its several stages,
would be all of them of a general
nature; with no diagram,
as expressed in one particular
book, would they have any necessary
connection: they would
remain in the mind in an independent
state, — independent
of any one particular object
respectively. And thus it is
that real, substantial, practically

applicable and useful
knowledge would be
obtained. The faculty put
in exercise would be the
judgment; whereas in the
other case, little is done
by the judgment, every thing,
or almost every thing, is
made to rest upon the memory.
