Arithmetic
Algebra nothing but a collection of synonymous propositions.
2.
In an elementary book of Geometry, the diagrams of all the propositions upon
one surface in a tabular form, with lines to shew their genealogy.
and by that means their use, so far as regards pure mathematics.
3.
Further indications of their use as applied to the several branches
of mixed mathematics. Name of this table, the Aplo-diagrammatic.
4.
In this table or another of to the several steps in the what may be called
the preparation for the demonstration, expression given by visible tokens
of the signification of which indication may be given in a column of the
table. This then will be as it were a mute method of instruction. As it
is written, nata signisque loqauntur.
5.
Note the inaccuracies that are to be found in Euclid's postulates, axioms,
and other matters preparatory to the propositions with their demonstrations.
Useful source of relief to the mind, these critical discussions. Thus removed
is the pressure made upon the mind by over-strained reference to authority.
6.
Explain the several contrivances by which the man of science was led
to the discovery of the proposition or to the demonstration of it.
7
Example, the principle of superposition, mentioned under that name
by D'Alembert in his Mélanges and applied to some of the earliest
propositions in Euclid's Elements.
8.
Désideratum, a form of words expressive of the contrivance employed
in each proposition. By the several intermediate steps, or say operations,
of which the preparatory matter, as above, consists, indication, it is
supposed, will be found given of these several contrivances.
