§ Elucidation continued — Nomenclature amended

Hand in hand, clearness
of conception and aptitude
of nomenclature
Correspondent to every thing signified
Necessary is an apt sign
not only to expression communication but
to possession retention of
a clear idea

In this branch of art and science as in every other, correspondent,
and concomitant to clearness of conception is appropriateness
or say aptitude of nomenclature. They go hand in hand.
Be the subject what it may, — in his own mind whatsoever new
ideas idea present themselves to a man in his own mind, neither can
he transmitt them it to any other mind, nor so much as be sure of retaining
it is his own in the same degree of clearness as at first, in an
accurate state for any length of time without some correspondingly
new appellation or say denomination or ap denomination, by which
it may be as it were anchored in that same mind of his.

Say, in a word, without a correspondent new sign, no new
thing signified.

Confused and imperfect
the stock of denominations
&c, so, of ideas

So long as the stock of appellations or say appellatives
or say names or say denominations belonging to the branch
of art-and-science in question is in an imperfect and confused
or imperfect state, so long will the stock of idea corresponding
ideas in men's minds be in a correspondingly confused or and
imperfect state.

Hence the demand for
the matter of this and
ensuing Sections.

Hence comes the demand — and that an irresistible one —
for the sort of matter of which the present and divers some ensuing
Sections is comprised.
