1. Definitions
7 Looking into Euclids elements of Geometry, we may see
four sorts of things which as employable and actually employed
employed in the character of means of demonstration and
effectuation, as above. These are styled 1. Definitions. 2. Axioms
3. Postulates. 4. Propositions.

1. Definitions.
A definition is nothing
but an exemplification
of one of the four modes
of equivalence above
-mentioned.
1 Grammatic's, a sentence
2. Logic's, an equivalent
to the term defined:
Use, guarding against
its un-
by the words employed
for that purpose
8. 1. First as to a Definitions. This is nothing but an exemplification
of one of the four modes of equivalence elsewhere spoken
of. It is, in the language of Grammarian's language a sentence
— in Logicians language a proposition, exhibited
in the character of an equivalent to the term defined; lest
otherwise the term should fail of calling forth up in the mind the idea which
it is desired and endeavoured so to call up. In this case
the definition as being by the supposition the source of
producing this effect in the mind in question then the term
defined is — would on each occasion be employed, but for
the long-windedness of it, and the entanglement it would
contract with the remainder of any words of which the
sentence it formed part of could be composed. The term
defined is therefore accordingly as means of abbreviation of
Of a definition
defined — say in the word definand performs accordingly
the office of and abbreviation with reference to the definition
given of it.
9
Preferable accordingly,
to the word Definand
would be the definition,
but for the entanglement
of the words of the
sentence which it can
s with the words of
the sentence into which
is occasion to merit it, in the quality of an elementary task.
9. A definition is capable of being employed, and
accordingly is actually employed — for either or both of two
purposes — to plant originally in the mind of the hearer or
reader any one given idea: say for explanation: or 2
to fix in the mind some one of two or more either to the exclusion
of all others: say, for fixation.
10
Definition: its Uses are
1. Insertion of the idea
into the mind
2. Fixation of it
therein.
