§ Courses, analytic &
synthetic

Posology

1.
Bad effect produced
at first start — the
result of fiction —
obscurity & misconception.

How then with reference to instruction is one
bad effect and that an all pervading one produced
at the first step and one may even say at the first word.
How early is it that obscurity and misconception — the never
failing results progeny of fiction when given and taken as realities
are the essential of to the science and inseparable from it

2.
At the commencement
analytic preferred
to synthetic
course — at proper
time synthetic will
be applied:— realities
will form the
beginning — the
works of nature
preferred.

The course thus taken is an example of the
synthetic mode of treatment as applied to science —
the course we prefer is the opposite course that is to say
the analytic. Understand always for a commencement
for when the time comes the synthetic will not pass
unheeded each will be applied to its proper use for
the purpose of conveying conception in the first instance
conception in which clearness and comprehensiveness will
be melted in union with facility the result of familiarity: the subject
matters we shall begin with are real existencies substances
things moveable beginning with them in preference with
the above mentioned great thing stiled immoveable as
being more in our power and within our grasp as for
so much greater variety of purposes than what that is
these things we shall take in hand as they are presented
to us by the hand of nature and from these things taking
as we hope our readers along with us we shall reduce
our conceptions of those things which by Euclid are
termed Solids confidning our consideration however to
those solids which having been produced by the
hand of nature and have at the same time used by man whereas
by Euclid or at any rate by his followers along
with those which being produced by nature are
of use to man are mixed up otherw which neither
have as yet been found produced by the hand of
nature nor if so produced would by means of their
several peculiarities of form be of any use to man
witness his Pentahedron, Dodecahedron & Eikosihedron
nor will they ever be made by man unless they it be in the
way of a raree show as part and parcel of a Mathematical Toy shop for the
amusement of young beginners
