Posology 16
10.
Geometry or say Morphoscopic
Posology
in the first instance
presents you with
a partless point as
per Euclid — obscure and untrue
Morphoscopic Look for example to Morphoscopic
Posology calling itself Geometry & speaking by the
mouth of Euclid its generally acknowledged father.
What it presents you with in the first instance is a
point: and a point (it says) is that which has no parts
now will an did any man living, or that ever lived
ever see such a thing as that which has no parts? No,
nor will any man that ever will live. there then what
it begins with is — an assertion, which frightens the imagination
by its obscurity, while it subjects itself to
censure at the hands of the judgment, by its untruth.
11.
Out of an indeterminable
multitude of
points he forms a
line — next we
have a surface —
next we get a
reality.
Out of an indeterminate and indeterminable
multitude of this sort of imaginary objects he proceeds
to make another and greater imaginary object a line
for what according to him is a line it is a sort of a
thing which has neither breadth nor thickness now how
often did it happen to him to see a sort of a thing
which had neither breadth nor thickness exactly as often
as to see the sort of a thing which had no parts proceeding
on in the same tract at the next step he brings
us on to the sort of a thing called a surface and this
is a sort of a thing which perhaps is as much
bigger than a line than a line is of than a point and it
is better of than either of those others for besides length
it has breadth into the bargain but still it has no thickness.
At the next step he brings us along with him to
the sort of a thing which besides length and breadth has
thickness and now for the first time we find ourselves
landed on the terra ferma of realities.
12.
for learner's instruction
conception should
precede demonstration —
Euclid inconceivable.
Not but that for demonstration of which bye and
bye the course may will perhaps be found the only
practicable one, but for the instruction of a learner
conception should proceed demonstration and this mode course
not only does not produce conception but to as many a
luckless mind it opposes an insuperable bar to the entrance of it
