13.
Now for History —
that of Posology
particularly Morphoscopics
a labyrinth
to which the word
Geometry
is a clue.

Proceeding by the opposite course we shall find
ourselves on Bolingbroke's other vantage ground the
height of History at the first view the History of Posology in
general and Morphoscopics in particular present to our
the eye a labyrinth but But to this labyrinth the word
Geometry seems to present a clue by this clue we may
be led to what may be called the conjectural history of
this branch of Art and Science of which conjectural history
presently.

14.
For analogy, remember
those histories of
physics which we
owe to chemistry.
Difference between
Priestly's History &
this — his had particular
Histories for
its support — ours
to be deduced and
conjectured: principal
support, the
word Geometry.

Meantime for the sake of analogy and illustration let us
recall to mind those histories of divers branches of experimental
physics for the histories of which we are so
much indebted to Chemistry: never will the reader of
these pages forget the delight with which he was filled
by the instructive and pleasing compilations which this
ingenious idea of which he was the inventor had for its
fruit. These were History of Electricity, History of Optics
or say of the discoveries in regard to light and colors
History of Magnetism. But between History as so applied
by Priestly and History as at present we are here endeavouring
to apply it there is this great difference his
General History had particular Histories for its materials
and supports it may be termed in one word (record-supported
History) Ours is little less than destitute of such
supports it will be to be derived by the help of deduction
and conjecture from the nature of the several matters of
which this part of the field of Art and Science is composed.

In this way the firmest and most permanent support
which is held out to us is that which is afforded us
by the the above mentioned appellation Geometry.
