§. Analytic method its uses

Means of facilitation
1. Elimination of useless
matter

Of the employment proposed to be given to the
analytic order one use will be — the elimination of
many a useless problem

Example — useless
problems
1 Quadrature of the circle

Example 1. Quadrature of the circle for all practical
purposes this problem may be and whenever desired is with
sufficient accuracy solved. For a circular plot of ground
an equivalent of a square form is without difficulty found. It
is so in a plot of ground & might at any time be so in a
writing table it might be so in the case of a die if for
any determinate purpose this were requisite in a word
it may be so in the way of any such true realities but
the geometrical circle what is it as contra distinguished
from a real one the geometrical square what is it as
contra distinguished from one of the boundaries of either
of a pair of dice another fiction it has its basis or first
element in the mathematical point by successive additions
of this thing which has no parts this is constituted another
fiction a line which has no breadth by of this imaginary
line which has no breadth is composed the imaginary
square in question a thing object which although it has length
and breadth has no thickness what then is that which
is required to be done by the problem concerning the
quadrature of the circle it is the finding two imaginary
objects which shall be equal to each other.

Thus is it with the whole doctrine of incommeasurable.
For every useful purpose the proportion of one to the other
in each pair can be found at any time: for a purpose
altogether useless, not. But, for this ignorance, such as it
is, what is any body the poorer or the worse?
