The mode in use being styled Decimal Arithmetic
Duodecimal Arithmetic is the mode that has been
given to this supposed more desirable mode
The operator when working in the Decimal
mode is desirous of dividing the quantity in
question without leaving a remainder discovers in
many instances sooner or later the impossibility of what
he is aiming at. When this discovery is made to him
it is made by one or other of two results the one of
which is dermed a repetand the other a circulate
the figures by which this neo plus ultra is indicated
Quere Whether this is so
are one or other of the three figures 3, 6 &, 9 when
any one of these figures two in the quotient follow each other in
immediate succession he fears that let man repeat
ever so often the expedient of adding to the divisor (or dividend)
another place of figures (of which expedient elsewhere)
he is no nearer to the solution of the proposed
problem than he was before he may go on
adding subjoining 3 to 3 6 to 6, or 9 to 9 till he is tired.
A Circulate is but a repetend in a different
form and under another name in the case of
a repetend so called the improbability of composing
the object desired is shewn by the continual
recurrence of the same one figure in the case of
a circillate it is called by the equally continual
recurrence of a sequeus composed of several figures.
What if by the substitution of the duodecimal
to the decimal arithmetic universal divisibility were
made to succeed to this so frequently recurring and
so constantly disappointing and perplexing indivisibility?
Vanish would in this case the whole tribe
of incommensurable quantities vanish also would all
difficulties about the quadrature of the circle
