Known and unknown
By known is meant, in this case, known without
effort — known without exertion: if the numbers indicated
by the Arabic figures varying encreasing in the numbers signified
at every point in the line composed of the figures, each
signifying a quantity ten times as great as that signified
by the quantity standing next before it on the left hand of it
of those signs the import is known and without effort
to every person who can read: of the import of the signs of which
a proposition expressed by the algebraic symbols above mentioned
and the equivalence of the aggregate composed of them with that of the generally
known sign
they alone have knowledge, to whom by a long course
of appropriate and peculiar peculiarly applied attention and exertion they,
and the as often as they present themselves, the import
of them, has become known.
In a word by known is meant — having the effect
of producing in the mind of the reader or hearer as the case
may be, correspondent ideas coincident with, or more
or less approaching to coincidence with those which by the
writer or speaker were intended and endeavoured to be produced.
