furnished by Algebra are employed?
Answer. All the several operations which have above
been explained as belonging to common arithmetic.

Question. What is the sign employed for the designation
of addition?
Answer. The sign of the cross in its more ordinary
shape and position: one of its two component lines
horizon being placed in a horizontal position, parallel to
the top and bottom of the book: when in which the mark is made: the book being at the same time placed in the position
in which its contents are most easily legible: the other
a vertical line, passing through the middle of the horizontal
line at right angles to it, as thus +.
