By the observation of the different phenomena in
respect of attraction and repulsion as between capillary
hollow tubes of glass and different sorts of liquids, one might
be led to infer — a termination might, in some point or other,
be produced in the scale by that circumstance: that, at a
certain minuteness, the attraction between the particles of the
tube, and the particles of the liquid, would be too strong to be
overcome by any muscular force. But this idea is presently
repelled by the consideration of the superior force possessed
by the limbs of a flea for example, in comparison with ours.
If our legs, compared with the bulk of our bodies, had the same
force as the legs of the flea, compared with the bulk of his
body, what is the greatest height to which we should be able
to leap? The height of the tallest of our trees would form but
a part of it.

we see bodies larger
and smaller than
any we perceived
before.

Note, that it is by magnification that we come to
perceive bodies larger than any we perceived before, as well
as bodies smaller than any we perceived before.
