Of dimensions considered as applied to hexaedron al
and other right-lined figures
Quest. 1. What do you understand by the word dimensions
as applied to right-lined parallelepipedons?
Ans. I understand the surfaces which constitute
their respective bounds or limits.
Quest. 2. Why are they stiled dimensions?
Ans. Because it is by means of them that we
reckon up and determine the solid content or in one
word, the bulk of the parallelepipedon whatever it be:
dimensions comes from a latin word which signifies
a measuring, or to measure
Quest. 3. In the sort of figure in question, how many
of these dimensions are there?
Ans. Three, corresponding to the number of
surfaces, viz. to constitute each dimension two surfaces.
Quest. 4. What are the names of these dimensions?
Ans. They vary according to circumstances: viz.
according to the nature of the implement product of
art or nature to which they are applied.
Quest. 5. Take for example a Table: the upper part
or slab of a square writing or dining table: what
are the words employed in speaking of its three dimensions?
Ans. Length, breadth, and thickness.
Quest. 6. Is there no other word wh on the occasions
on which where the word breadth is employed, may be
indifferently employed instead of it?
Ans. Yes: the word width.
