Posology
wd therefore take for his fixed point one of the two
extremities: making all the whole line i.e. all the other points
in it more round that one, and of the two operations
this the more simple one, is that which wd. give him the
least trouble. Describing this figure, he wd. thus get
any number of lines he pleased, all of them to a certainty
equal to one another. But how is it that he knows
that they are thus equal? Only by this, that there are so
many superficial or ideal lines, marked out, by the same linear solid, if so
it may be stiled, in its progress, from the side it set out
from to the other.
Thus it is that in this case the idea of equality grew
out of the idea of identity: & thus it is that by means of the
identity the equality as between line and line is shewn and
rendered unquestionable.
By this consideration an objection which had presented
itself to this mode of proceeding, on an occasion that soon
after followed, wd. had it occurred in time have been obviated.
