To the now first mentioned of these I make
such humble contribution as I was at that time able to make
to the advancement of the art and science of Chemistry.
Torbern Bergman the Munchen School – Bergman in
those days at the head of this branch of knowledge had
just published in the German Language his little tract on
the use of Chemistry, and its application to the purposes of
common life. I was at that time in habits of intercourse with
Dr Schwedian a Native of Tyrol who at toward the close of his
days with considerable repetition in Paris where
a few years ago he went to live. He was with out
qu The English language was familiar to him: he conversed
in it with fluency: but was not sufficiently master of the
of it, to publish in it a work capable of reaction.
A proposal I sent to him was – that he should take
in least this work of Bergman's or he was translate
of it into English, which then I would take in hand the manuscript
of his translation: and to the best of my ability
it for the press, which then my manuscript should be at his
disposal. He accepted my effort he prefers, and the focus
or our joint labour was the Essay a copy of which now lies before
me bearing for title On the use and application of Chemistry
to the purpose of human life.

The work has for this many years been out of
print. The cabinet minute in the subject matter
of it. afford a reference account for all not being represented
in its greatest House: but it seems somewhat extraordinary
that the idea of it states not have been present, and
