All our ideas to speak with Locke are derived from sense. Thus for Locke.
All our ideas are derived from impressions. Thus for Hume.
All our ideas are copies, or excerpts from, or compounds
of impressions. The impression of this paper
the impression made in my mind by this paper — is the
picture I have in my mind now that I am looking
at the paper: the idea I have of this paper — the idea
lodged in my mind by this paper — is the picture I
have in it of this paper, now that my eyes are shut.
All our ideas are derived from sense. Therefore
all our mathematical ones. If there be any ideas that
are innate — a matter not altogether exempt from
doubt, no mathematical ones at any rate are of the
number: they may without exception be traced to physical
ones — ideas derived from matter through the medium
of sensation sense (a).
(a) Note or Text
In the consideration of physical objects, in
Morphoscopic Posology, you put aside every property
but that which those which are respectively designated by the words figure and
number: in Alegomorphic Posology you put aside
even the properties designated by the word figure: you
confine your attention to those alone which are designated
by the word Number: — you put aside
the properties in question: that is to say you
confine your attention to the impressions and ideas particulars
from which the your more general ideas, as designated by the word
property is are thus applied, has been deduced.
