Introduction
§ Euclid's erroneous course
2
Now then, how stands the truth — the plain truth — of the
case. Of itself, to no man's mind could any such item
as that of a point ever presented itself; The only objects
which ever present themselves to any man's mind in a determinate
sense and shape, confined in its sides within
determinate bounds — are solids.
Let him then take one of these solids say for
example a crystal of common salt: and for as crystals
of this substance exist in an infinite variety of
sizes, we have a right to choose one large enough
for our purposes. Taking this crystal in hand, he beholds
it bounded by — contained within six surfaces. Of these
six, he finds himself at liberty, for any length of time,
to consider — to think of — to pay attention to — any one, and
this without doing so by any one of the others: so doing, he
obtains the idea of a surface
After considering in its totality, for as long a
time as is agreable to him this same surface, surfaces
he finds beholds it bounded by — contained within — four lines,
extremities, to which we give the name of lines in no
respect, except that of the direction in which it extends does he find any between any of these lines
any difference: in pronouncing this of them he pronounces
them, all of them, equal to each other: for by equality of
extent nothing more nothing else is meant — than non-
existence of difference: observing every part of them to be
in the same direction not swerving from it to the one side
or to the other, to these lines he gives a characteristic tantamount
to that of right ones
