Introduction ☞ Quere whether to insert
this word?

Ch. or §. 1 Ch. or §. 1
Subject matter of this work

1
Shewn by the title are
1. Subject matter
2. Object

1. By the table given to the present work, the subject matter
and the object
expression is already given in some sort
both to the subject matter of it, and to the object of it, or say
to the end-in-view

2

2. I proceed with the first mentioned of these topics
for its subject matter it has whatsoever has been in use to
be designated by the appellation of Mathematic: and to
obviate misconception included under it is here meant to be Arithmetic
in the most common acceptation of the word, and of the matter
thereby designated whatsoever is in most ordinary and
extensive use

3
Division I.
Mathematics is either
1. Pure; or 2. Mixt

3 Of this vast integer, two divisions, derived from two
different sources require here to be noticed in the first place
brought to view

1 The first I shall mention is the division into pure
Mathematics and mixt Mathematics This requires explanation

4.
Consequence of the
word purity, obscurity
and delusion

5. 4 Clouds of delusion hang over every part of the field of
this branch of art-and-science: and here we have one what
spreads over the whole of it

5
By purity is suggested
in the name of
the opposite quality
impurity: to which stands
a
dyslogistic appellative
to which stands
associated the idea of
strong disapprobation
through Here then is malificent
delusion: for
no just ground for disapprobation
has place

6. By the word purity is attached to stands associated with the main idea
— to the only idea which in the in speaking of the art and science
ought in general to be held up to view are irrelevant in
a very different and idea namely that of
approbation as applied to the one of these sections, and
of implied though faint disapprobation of the other: the an effect
of the word attribution pure being to hold up to view its opprob
— and with it is the notion that this dyslogistic attribution
may
may with propriety be
applied to the other section
of this important whole.
